The tournament, one of the toughest of the year so far, in memory of the Eighth World Champion, Mikhail Tal (1936-1992) is approaching its halfway stage in Moscow.
Leading scorers: 1st= T Radjabov (AZE) & A Morozevich (RUS) both 2.5/3; 3rd VB Kramnik (RUS) 2. England’s Luke McShane, the wildcard, has one point.
Interestingly, the event began not with an icebreaker exercise but a blitz tournament, whereby frontrunners were given five out of nine whites in the main event, described above. This could be likened to a motor racing warm-up circuit to allocate grid positions. Tal would have richly approved!
