Happy Birthday: Nigel Povah

Nigel Edward Povah was born in London a mere sixty years ago. Today is his birthday and we send our best wishes. In 1983 he became both correspondence and otb IM! A GM title at postal play followed. Today he may lay claim to being one of our strongest ever postal players (part from Penrose?-Ed); OK apart from Jonathan Penrose.

He was one of the four authors of the great Batsford Lasker/Pelikan wayback in 1978. He penned the excellent primer, like Fischer’s Sixty Memorable Games, an early Faber ‘Chess Training’. A former President of Streatham & Brixton CC, Nigel will be pleased to be reminded that they won the First Division of the London League in 1976/7. (Under his leadership such players as Danny King, the late Danny Feinstein and Julian Hodgson were blooded.). His articles on 1.e4 g6 2.Bc4 Bg7 3.Qf3! are still fondly remembered by our generation.

He would be the last person to want this to slide into a part obituary, so here are four bright games, all short and lively. Enjoy!
