Gibraltar (7) – A Leader Emerges – but who is he … ??

58th Russian Chess Championship Kazan 2005Mystery surrounds the Gibraltar Masters.

After seven rounds with the seemingly unknown Russian Grandmaster, Nikita Vitugov, leads the massive field of 247 hungry wolves. The Russian beat last night’s joint-leader, the Bulgar, Georgiev. Gata Kamsky, the US Champ, won with Black versus Venezuelan E Iturrizaga.

1st V Vitiugov (RUS) 6.5/7; 2nd= Le Quang Liem (VIE), G Kamsky (US) and ND Short (ENG) all 6; 5th= M Adams, GCB Jones (both ENG), A Shirov (LAT), V Ivanchuk (UKR) …

Three rounds remain.

    14 players are tied on 5.5/7 including Shirov and Ivanchuk, two of the strongest grandmasters of all time! With so much prize money at stake – and only 3 more rounds to go – we may see things decided by a single brilliant move or moment’s hesitation! Stay tuned!
