1979 Chess Diary

North of the Borders

As always there are events for all strengths. More importantly we have secured the backing of a benefactor and so we should have at least 10 GMs and 10 IMs competing in the International Open.

The event is being held in the historic Trades Hall, Glasgow 7-15 July 2012.
BCM promises good coverage!!
119th Scottish Chess Championships

Over 20 titled players have now entered. See the website (address at bottom) for up to date numbers.

Here are the bed and full Scottish breakfast rates at Strathclyde University. These are within easy walking distance of the venue.
Ensuite single room: £42.00 Vat inclusive
Standard single room: £32.70 Vat inclusive

Perhaps more attractive for some players are Self catering flats with 4 or 6 standard single bedrooms, kitchen, dining and lounge area.
The rates are £17.50 Vat inclusive per person. A 6 person flat will be £105 per person per week or £735.00 per flat per week. They try to keep arrival and departure days to Fridays and Mondays but that is variable. We also offer these self catering flats for a 3 night short break – arrive Friday and depart Monday or a 4 night short break arrive Monday and depart Friday.

The record may be modest but it is not wrong. The Scottish Championship was held on the very first occasion in Glasgow from 21st-25th July, 1884. The winner was a certain Mr. Crum. Final scores: J Crum 7/9. Fraser, Spens, Forsyth, Mills, Andrews, Gilchrist, McLeod, Chambers & Fyfe followed.

John Crum (1842-1922) was never to win the title again but the event was to visit Glasgow on many occasions in the years that followed, not to mention Troon, St Andrews, Ayr and, of course, Edinburgh. Crum was an endgame study composer and journalist.
