If you are an active chess coach, as I am, working mainly with children, you will find ’1001 Chess Exercises’ (New in Chess) a gem of a book.
All my private pupils are given a set of problems as homework – it ensures that they at least do something between lessons; it teaches them various combinational patterns and gets them in the habit of analysing complex positions. This marvellous little book will be an asset to me and any other junior coach looking for useful exercises for their pupils. Even the one movers will make the absolute beginner think a little.
The book is beautifully laid out, with 18 chapters covering most tactical themes and 12 different problems on most pages, with a section on mate in 3; a section on mate in 4; and a final chapter on curiosities.
Highly recommended!
