Russia took the clear lead today in the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul. The Russians, who have not won the title since 2002, must be dancing in excited little circles. Russia 6.5/7; China and Ukraine both 6, Armenia, USA … 150 teams. England did very decently, beating the Georgians with Nigel Short, once again, being our star: M Mchedlishvili draw M Adams; M Gagunashvili draw G Jones; L Pantsulaia 0-1 N Short; K Shanova draw D Howell.
